Castlereagh Street
This collection contains a small selection of archives relating to Castlereagh Street.
Castlereagh Street is a major street within the central business district (CBD) of Sydney. It was named after Robert Stewart, the 2nd Marquess of Londonderry, Lord Castlereagh. The street runs north to south in a one-way direction from Hunter Street in the north to Hay Street in the south.
Trams operated in a loop from Central station, running north along Pitt Street to Circular Quay returning south via Castlereagh Street. The tram line closed in 1957.
A number of significant buildings are located on Castlereagh Street including The Trust Building, Culwulla Chambers, the Metropolitan Fire Station, the Savings Bank Building, the Masonic Centre, the Downing Centre (Mark Foys) and the MLC Centre.
