This collection contains a small selection of archives relating to Victory Day, also known as Peace Day or Victory Celebrations.
The Treaty of Versailles was signed on 28 June 1919. In Sydney, the official end of the war was to be marked by a Victory Day parade on 19 July 1919. This was a more sombre affair than the pandemonium that greeted the news of the armistice - see Remembrance Day. Victory Day recognised the huge sacrifices made during World War I and ceremonies included 3 minutes silence for the fallen.
The major event on the day was a march through the city by over 10,000 sailors, soldiers, Red Cross and other war workers.
