This collection contains a small selection of archives relating to Remembrance Day (formerly Armistice Day).
From Friday 8 November 1918, rumours had reached Sydney of Germany's capitulation and people started to fill the streets. News of the signing of the Armistice reached Sydney on the evening of Monday 11 November 1918. 12 November was declared as a public holiday and huge crowds continued to gather in the city centre. The crowds became so dense that it was difficult to move. Many public buildings were illuminated or decorated with 'Peace' or 'Victory' signs.
The official end of the war was marked some months later - see Victory Day.
Originally known as Armistice Day, 11 November became known as Remembrance Day after the end of World War II.
