The Benevolent Society of NSW was founded in 1813 with the aim of providing relief and accommodation to paupers, the chronically sick, people with disabilities, single mothers, abandoned children and the aged. The Benevolent Society’s Asylum was built in 1820 to a design by convict-bricklayer Francis Lawless. The imposing Georgian-style building on Pitt Street was demolished to make way for Central Station, although it was still occupied in July 1901.
