Two men are deep in conversation out the front. A boy in a cap sits at a top storey window. Rugs are airing on the sills. Note the elaborate gas lamps at the pub’s entrances. Publicans were required to have a light burning outside their premises from 1830. On 18 December 1901, a new single (one way) electric tramway opened along Pitt Street between Circular Quay and Gipps Street (now Barlow Street). Tram tracks are visible in the foreground but there is no overhead tramway wire, indicating the tramway was still being built. The photograph also shows the tramway rails sitting on the road surface, with wooden planks placed either side of the tracks to allow foot and road traffic into Wilmot Street. The track was later laid in a shallow channel with the top of the rail flush with the surrounding road surface. The upright poles with rings and the long horizontal poles were probably temporary barriers to prevent other road users crossing into the construction site, much like today's safety bollards and barriers.
