Coffee palaces were an alternative to the pub, welcoming both women and teetotallers. The Great Western Coffee Palace on the corner of Sussex and Hay streets was designed by the City Architect and built by the Sydney Municipal Council as a 'temperance hotel'. It became a licensed hotel, known as the Burlington Hotel, in 1916, and in the 1980s was converted into the Kien Hay Centre / Burlington Centre, containing retail and offices.LanguageNo linguistic content - Not applicable (zxx)Special citationCoffee palaces were an alternative to the pub, welcoming both women and teetotallers.
