Unique IDAG-0256DescriptionControl of markets for the sale of foodstuffs for Sydney was a function of Council when it was first incorporated in 1842. Prior to April 1931 the Markets were a part of the Assets and Stores Department. This Department was disbanded in April 1931, and the markets branch was transferred to CA 40, Town Clerk's Department.
In 1956, as a result of a request from Alderman Richard Holmes, the Markets Branch was separated from the Town Clerk's Department and the City Markets Department was created. At this time the Markets area covered a space of approximately 13 acres consisting of seven markets for the sale of fruit, vegetables, poultry, fish and flowers, a parking station, 2 parking lots, a public weighbridge and a Cold Store.
