Corporation Assets and Stores Department
Unique IDAG-0079DescriptionCouncil decided at the beginning of 1900 to appoint a superintendent whose time would be "devoted solely to exploiting the Corporation Assets to best advantage". In his Annual Report of 1900 the Town Clerk states that the assets had formerly been supervised more or less by various officers, and had suffered for want of strong control.
The Department was made responsible for control and regulation of Council's assets and properties, including the produce markets, the baths, the cattle saleyards, the rental of Council properties, maintenance of stores, regulation and licensing of hawkers, porters and barrowmen, and maintenance and supply of stores to the rest of Council.
J R Palmer was appointed the first Superintendent of Corporation Assets on 18 January 1900. At this time the Department was responsible for the machinery plant in the Town Hall, the Queen Victoria markets, the Fish Market, the pumping plant at Woolloomooloo Bay, the Metropolitan Cattle Saleyards at Flemington, the small stockyards, the Old and New Belmore Markets, the Fig Tree Baths, the Ladies Lavatory in Parker Street and the Stores.
On 13 March 1929, the Commissioners (who had replaced the Council in 1928), resolved that the Stores be transferred to CA 61, City Engineering and Building Surveyor's Department, and the name of the Department was changed to Corporation Assets Department.
On 20 March 1929 the Commissioners transferred the function of rent collection from the Treasury Department to the Corporation Assets Department.
On 15 April 1931 the Department was disbanded by Council. This was as a result of a Minute by the Lord Mayor J Jackson, after "serious defalcations" were discovered in the Department, relating to the collection of rent from leased properties.
The responsibility for collection of rent was transferred back to the City Treasury Department. The rest of the functions were transferred to CA 40, Town Clerk's Department.Creation18-Jan-00Abolition15-Apr-31
