Death of Edward Rout: SYDNEY, Wednesday.-Another case of small-pox has occurred, the patient being a man named Edward Rout, living off Albion-street, Surry Hills. He had been working as a carpenter near the quarantined Chinese house in Lower George-street. His house, with its inmates, has been quarantined…. Edward Rout, the carpenter, residing in Bellevue-street, Surry Hills, died about 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and his body has been buried by order of the Government. This unfortunate man is the first victim to the present epidemic of small-pox. He had no one to attend him since his sickness but his wife, and it is a reproach to this community that he was allowed to die without some effort having been made to save his life. No medical man could see him without being detained in the house with him and we are not aware that any attempt was made by the authorities to obtain the services of a medical man and a trained nurse willing to attend upon the sick man. If this had been done poor Rout's life might have been saved; and, further, his wife, having to minister to all her husband's wants, was exposed to greater risk of infection than she otherwise would … [ref: Evening News 17 June 1881 page 2]

‘Sydney Touches’ by columnist ‘Sentinel’: Poor Mrs Rout and family are receiving a helping hand from Sydney. Yesterday the sum of £105 was handed to her which was raised by means of subscriptions and amateur performances. This sum appears at a glance large, but when it is considered that it is only about half of what her unfortunate help-mate could have earned in a year, her position is still the saddest of the small-pox sufferers. … [ref: Glen Innes Examiner and General Advertiser Tuesday 6 September 1881 - Page 2]

Note: Norah Rout 31, Eliza 13, Thomas 8, Maud 5 and May 3, were held at the Quarantine Ground at North Head from mid June until 27 August excepting little May who contracted small pox and was not released until 17 September 1881. They suffered from lack of heating, often poor or insufficient food, inadequate clothing, lack of footwear and other privations. Norah was described as being ill and weak from the stress of nursing her dying husband. She was also, probably unknown to any at the time, pregnant with William who was born the following January.

Death: JASPERSON —May 18, 1934 at her residence, 30 Kimberley-road, Hurstville, Hanorah beloved wife of Frederick Jasperson aged 87 years. Requiescat in pace. [ref: SMH 19 May 1934 p 14]

Funeral: JASPERSON -The Relatives and Friends of Mr. and Mrs. R. ROY and FAMILY are invited to attend the Funeral of their beloved STEP FATHER and GRANDFATHER Frederick Jasperson; to leave 131 Edwin Street, Croydon, THIS DAY at 3.15 p.m. for Church of England Cemetery, Rookwood.
