Plague
During the first outbreak of the bubonic plague from January to August 1900, 303 people contracted the disease and a third of them died. This collection documents the cleansing efforts by municipal councils aimed at limiting the death toll. Inner city areas were inspected, cleaned, whitewashed, cleared of rubbish and even knocked down and rebuilt.
A further outbreak of plague was reported in Camperdown in 1922-1923. Photographs from Camperdown in this collection are selected from Plague Prevention in Camperdown, a number of photographs taken to document conditions and the impact of clearing.
