Camperdown Memorial Rest Park and Cemetery
This collection brings together selected items relating to Camperdown Cemetery (also known as St Stephen's Church Cemetery) and Camperdown Memorial Rest Park. They are located in Newtown.
Camperdown Cemetery was a private cemetery founded in 1848 and consecrated in 1849. It was an Anglican General Cemetery but accepted all denominations if buried with the rites of the Church of England. It originally took up all of the land of the current cemetery and park.
In 1868 the cemetery was closed to new burials (Camperdown and Randwick Cemeteries Act, 1867) but there were still burials for people who had already purchased plots. These burials were licensed by the Colonial Secretary. The last burial was in 1926.
The current St Stephen’s Church was designed by Edmund Blacket in 1874, succeeding his 1844 church on the corner of Longford and Stephen Streets. An Act of Parliament allowed the church to be built within the grounds of the cemetery.
In 1948, part of Camperdown Cemetery was dedicated as a public park by an Act of the NSW State Parliament (Camperdown Cemetery Act, 1948). All but 4 acres of the cemetery were resumed in 1950, leaving only a small walled off section of cemetery. This area of cemetery continued to be managed by a body of trustees. Some of the larger and more significant memorials were re-erected there and other headstones were appended to the cemetery walls. The remaining area was cleared and made into a public park now known as the Camperdown Memorial Rest Park.
Note: The Camperdown Memorial Rest Park Trust was established under the Camperdown Cemetery (Amendment) Act,1950. The City of Sydney Council became the administrator of the Trust, with the Town Clerk as Secretary. The archives holds some records created by the Camperdown Memorial Rest Park Trust, including plans, photographs and correspondence. In 1970, with the enactment of the Camperdown Cemetery (Amendment) Act, responsibility for the Park was transferred to Marrickville Municipal Council.
