This collection brings together selected items relating to the Old Burial Ground, which was the main cemetery for Sydney, 1792-1820. The cemetery was on the site of the current Sydney Town Hall. It was also known as St Andrew's Church Cemetery, Cathedral Close Cemetery, George Street Cemetery, George Street Burial Ground or George Street Necropolis and, retrospectively, the Town Hall Cemetery.
On 28 January 1820 it was replaced by the new Devonshire Street Cemetery (now where Central Station stands) and some memorials were moved there.
in 1869, then the site was to be redeveloped for the Sydney Town Hall, many graves were moved to Devonshire Street Cemetery and other cemeteries.
