The Hotel Australia opened in Castlereagh Street in 1891. In the 1920s an Art Deco extension designed by architect Emil Sodersteen was added, with further entrances on Martin Place and Rowe Street. The hotel included a banqueting hall, dining room, and several bars.
It was purchased by MLC Insurance and Finance group in 1968 who closed it on 30 June 1971, and demolished in 1972, to make way for the MLC Centre.
