The Australia Hotel was designed by architect Emil Sodersteen and opened in 1891. The main entrance was located on Castlereagh Street, with other access points at Martin Place and Rowe Street. The hotel included a banqueting hall, dining room, and several bars.
It was purchased by MLC Insurance and Finance group in 1968 who closed it on 30 June 1971, and demolished in 1972, to make way for the MLC Centre.
