This collection includes selected records of the former Waltons department store in Sydney.
John Walton (1904-1998) established a menswear store in 1951 on George Street Sydney, opposite the Queen Victoria Building (QVB). It was expanded to include buildings on Park Street. The building was formerly Murdoch's.
In 1955, Walton formed an alliance with the US company Sears and Roebuck. Waltons Ltd bought Marcus Clark & Co in 1966 and Anthony Hordern & Sons and McDowells in 1971. By this time, when John Walton retired and his son took over, the Waltons chain included 96 department stores.
Alan Bond bought Waltons in 1981. The flagship Waltons store on George Street was demolished in the early 1980s. A new Waltons building was proposed for the same site but financial losses meant it was not built and the site remained empty for a number of years, before being replaced by the Citibank office tower.
The Waltons name was no longer used when Bond sold the business in 1987. The Cooke family renamed remaining stores as Venture and Norman Ross.
