This collection includes a selection of items relating to Murdoch’s Ltd, a men’s and boys’ department store located 516 Park Street, Sydney.
Murdoch's was opened in 1893 by James Anderson Murdoch (1867–1939) who had previously worked for Anthony Hordern's and Palmer's. The business slowly prospered in the 1890s and by 1914 it had 400 employees. In 1909 Murdoch formed a limited liability company and instituted a co-partnership scheme where hard working employees could have cash bonuses or shared in the company.
Murdoch's Ltd in Park Street expanded rapidly after World War 1. In 1922 factories were built in Surry Hills.
In 1928 Murdoch's Ltd was registered as a public company and next year it acquired additional premises in George Street Sydney.
The 12 storey complex was a feature on the skyline for many years. Its 210 foot cupola was designed to mimic the Town Hall Clock Tower opposite. The building was taken over by Waltons.
