C.Moore Hardy - Sydney Star Observer (SSO) Collection

This collection contains digitised photographs by C.Moore Hardy's for the Sydney Star Observer.

Hardy has photographed the gay and lesbian scene in Sydney since the late 1970s. After completing study at 3 arts schools Hardy intentionally focus her attention on the queer lesbians, subcultures within the Queer subculture & the other minority communities representing our entire community, ie: Indigenous (First Nations), Disabled, Multiracial & multicultural and ethnic minorities. She is considered by historians as a critically important documenter of LGBTIQA+ history and of Sydney history. 

Hardy worked for the Sydney Star Observer as a freelance photographer, taking the first two cover shots and contributing work until the mid 1990s.  

Hardy is a volunteer and a prolific donor to the City of Sydney Archives. See her special collections for more photographs.

Very little descriptive information accompanied the SSO photographs. Archives volunteers have recorded what was available. Some information has been crowd sourced from photographers or the LGBTIQA+ community. The City of Sydney welcomes additional information such as dates, places, names and events. It is unclear which photographs were published in the magazine, although some have percentage signs (%) - indicating the percentage of the photograph planned for publication. It is difficult to match photographs to issues. Some photographs from the stock photograph library were culled by editors at various times so the collection is not complete.
