The unveiling ceremony of the fountain was performed
on 29 August 1896 by the Mayor of Sydney Alderman I. K. Ives.

It was reported and described in Australian Town and Country magazine, on 13 September 1896. The fountain is 9ft across the base, 12ft in height, and consists of a carved and moulded base, with a semi-circular drinking basin on each side, plated cups and taps, ornamented with frogs and figure of young Triton blowing upon a conch. It bears marble tablets with inscription, 'This land and fountain presented to the Mayor, Alderman and citizens of Sydney by Samuel Hordern 1986. Isaac Ellis Ives Mayor'.
