Frazer Fountain, St Mary's Road
Unique IDPC-000016Creator/ArchitectDesigner: Thomas SapsfordSculptor: Lawrence Beveridge TypeFountainDescriptionThis Baroque-style, sandstone drinking fountain was the second of two gifted to the public by wealthy business owner and philanthropist, John Frazer. Designed by City Architect, Thomas Sapsford, and sculpted by Lawrence Beveridge, the fountain was erected in 1884 at the outer perimeter of the Domain on St Mary’s Road, opposite the northern end of St Mary’s Cathedral.
The fountain's location at the intersection of Prince Albert Road and St Mary's Road has historically exposed it to increased risk of damage from vehicles. Unlike the first fountain in Hyde Park, which has had its taps and drinking cups replaced with a bubbler, a resolution of the Council in 1936 to replace this fountain’s dolphin taps was not implemented.External linksFrazer FountainSubject tagsFountainsHyde Park
