In earlier years the Coronation Bandstand stood on the site. This was removed and a sunken garden installed. In September 1951, a decision was made to redevelop the site as a memorial garden.

After the death of King George VI in 1952, the garden was renamed Sandringham Garden.

Lyndon Dadswell (sculptor) and Dr H Epstein (architect) were asked to design and construct a memorial to King George V and King George VI. Plans were announced in 1953, including memorial gates.

The Sandringham Memorial Gates were unlocked by Queen Elizabeth on 4 Feburary 1954.
