Government House
Sydney's Government House, the residence of the governor of New South Wales, is located on Conservatorium Road, off Macquarie Street, adjacent to the Royal Botanic Gardens. Constructed between 1836 and 1845 using local sandstone, the building replaced the first Government House, which had stood on the corner of Bridge and Phillip streets. The new site was selected by Governor Bourke who commissioned the building in 1832. The plans were drawn up by the royal architect Edward Blore in the Gothic Revival style and works were carried out under instruction by the government architect Mortimer Lewis. Governor George Gipps, was the first occupant in 1845.
There have been numerous alterations, additions and repairs to the Government House building over the years, including the construction of a porte-cochere in 1873, an arcaded colonnade on the eastern façade in 1880, and further additions and replacement of the facade in 1896-1901.
