The stone and brick building was designed by architects Peddle, Thorp and Walker in the Commercial Italianate Palazzo style. Built in 1931 and originally named Science House, it was a venue for various scientific bodies. From 1978 to 1991 it was occupied by the Department of Sport and Recreation as the site for a Hall of Champions, and renamed Sports House, later returning to its original name. The footpath going up Essex Street on right hand side includes a stairway and railing.
