Built in stages from 1849 to 1919, it was designed in Victorian Neo-Classical and Italian Palazzo styles by New South Wales Colonial and Government Architects Mortimer Lewis, Edmund Blacket, Walter Liberty Vernon, and George McRae. In 1981 it was sold to the InterContinental Hotel group and the tower building behind was constructed. In the foreground are vehicles and street decorations for Festival of Sydney including banners and a decorated column.
