Begun in 1827, the Museum building was designed by a number of architects, each adding a section: Mortimer Lewis, James Barnet and Walter Liberty Vernon. It is in Old Colonial Grecian style and constructed of sandstone. In front is a sign for the 1988 exhibition 'Pieces of Paradise: Pacific art through many eyes'. In the foreground are pedestrians and traffic.
