It was painted over two nights in August 1991 by Andrew Aiken and Juilee Pryor with the help of others, notably Tony Spanos who provided the cherry picker crane used on the second night. Several months after completing the mural, and following disagreements with the local community arts officer, Aiken painted out the figures of people along the base and replaced them with a 'Declaration of Independence' for the former Municipality of Newtown, with an invitation for local people to sign. Aiken later replaced this with the Aboriginal flag after the garden bed was removed by Marrickville Council.
