Unique IDOR-0004DescriptionThe Municipality of Redfern was incorporated in 1859. In 1860 part of the original area was excised as the new Municipality of Waterloo. The boundaries of Redfern (from 1860) were: Cleveland St (N), Phillip St and Boundary St (S), [South] Dowling St (E) and in the West the boundary skirted the Eveleigh Railway Works and then followed the Blackwattle Swamp Creek NE to Cleveland St. This boundary is best followed by reference to a contemporary plan such as Higginbotham & Robinson 1886. Redfern was divided into Redfern, Belmore and Surry Hills wards. From 1 January 1949 Redfern Municipal Council was abolished and the area became part of the City of Sydney. Subsequently, Redfern was part of South Sydney Municipal Council from 1968-81, then rejoined the City (1981-1988) and is now part of the City of South Sydney (1989+).CreationNSW Gazette, 11 August 1859AbolitionLocal Government (Areas) Act 1948
