Unique IDOR-0006DescriptionWaterloo Municipal Council was incorporated in 1860, from part of the area originally incorporated as Redfern Municipal Council in 1859. In 1868 part of the Waterloo area was excised to form the new Municipality of Alexandria. From 1868 the boundaries were: Phillip St and Boundary St (N), Botany Rd (W), Gardeners Rd (S) and [South] Dowling St (E). Until Dowling St was pushed southwards to Gardeners Rd the line of road rather than the orad itself was the boundary of Waterloo. This municipality was not divided into Wards. For much of the nineteenth century, and even later, the bulk of the municipal area, south of Lachlan St and Bourke St, was swampland, water supply dams, and the preferred location for noxious industries such as tallow works and wool scouring. From 1 January 1949 the Municipality of Waterloo was abolished and the area became part of the City of Sydney. Subsequently the Waterloo area became part of the Municipal Council of South Sydney (1968-1981), rejoined the City (1981-1988) and is now part of the City of South Sydney (1989+).CreationNSW Gazette, 17 May 1860AbolitionLocal Government (Areas) Act, 1948
