The Municipality of Paddington was incorporated in 1860 and operated until 1948 when it was absorbed by the City of Sydney. In 1968 Paddington was split between the Municipality of Woollahra and the City of Sydney.
Background:
Paddington was divided into Lower, Middle, Upper and Glenmore Wards.
The original boundaries of were from Rushcutters Creek and New South Head Road (as the north west to north boundary); to the north side of Moore Park Road (as the south boundary); from Ocean Road and Jersey Road (as the east boundary); to [South] Dowling Street (as the west boundary). The south and east boundaries of Paddington Municipality are convoluted, and reference should be made to a map from that period (such as Higginbotham & Robinson c1886).
From 1 January 1949, Paddington Municipal Council was abolished, and the area became part of the City of Sydney. Woollahra Municipal Council (1860+) took over responsibility for Paddington (north of Oxford Street) from the City of Sydney in 1968. The portion south of Oxford Street remained part of the City of Sydney until 1989 when it became part of the City of South Sydney.
