Newtown Municipal Council
Unique IDOR-0007DescriptionThe Municipality of Newtown was incorporated on 12 December 1862 with the first meeting of council on 16 February 1863. The municipal area ran along both sides of Cooks River Rd (King Street) from St Peters railway station to the University of Sydney. Reference should be made to the Higginbotham & Robinson map of circa 1886 for precise boundary lines. Newtown was divided into Camden, O'Connell, Kingston and Enmore Wards.
From 1 January 1949, following the passing of the Local Government (Areas) Act 1948, Newtown Municipal Council was abolished and the area became part of the City of Sydney.
In 1968 the Newtown area west of King Street and south of Church Street was transferred from the City to Marrickville Municipal Council. The area west of King Street and north of Church Street stayed with the City until 1989 when it became part of the new City of South Sydney. The rest of Newtown, east of King Street, was part of South Sydney Municipal Council (1968-1981) and rejoined the City (1981-1988).
On 1 January 1989, a new South Sydney City Council (SSCC) was created. The City of Sydney was reduced in size to only the Central Business District, and some immediately adjacent neighbourhoods such as The Rocks, Haymarket, Pyrmont, and part of Ultimo.
On 6 February 2004, the remaining South Sydney City Council (SSCC) was amalgamated back into the City of Sydney. This created a new local government area boundary for the City that has remained unchanged until the present day.
