Unique IDOR-0009DescriptionThe Municipality of Alexandria was incorporated in 1868, from part of the area of the Waterloo Municipal Council. The boundaries (more or less) were: Eveleigh Workshops and Boundary St (N), Botany Rd (E), Gardeners Rd (S) and an irregular line along Barwon Park Rd, [Sydney park] and north to Eveleigh Workshops (W). Reference to the Higginbotham & Robinson map of the Municipality (c1886) is recommended for more precise information. Alexandria became an industrial centre and a 1943 Council commemorative history referred to the municipality as "the Birmingham of Australia". Alexandria was divided into South, East and Beaconsfield wards. From 1 January 1949 Alexandria Municipal Council was abolished and the area became part of the City of Sydney. From 1968-1981 it was part of the South Sydney Municipal Council, rejoined the City (1981-1988) and is now part of South Sydney City Council.CreationNSW Gazette, 31 August 1868AbolitionLocal Government (Areas) Act 1948
