Sydney Trade Fair Committee
Unique IDAG-0173DescriptionThe Sydney Trade Fair was first held at the Royal Agricultural Showgrounds in 1961, having initially been discussed at an informal meeting at the Showground in 1959, where the idea was proposed by the Industrial Public Relations Service (N.S.W.). This was followed by a second meeting, also in that year, held at Town Hall, and opened by the Lord Mayor. It was at this meeting that a motion was carried that a Committee be constituted to manage the Trade Fair, the Chairman of which was to be the Lord Mayor. The other office bearers included the Governor of NSW as Patron and the Premier as President, as well as including representatives from the Sydney Chamber of Commerce, the Retail Traders Association and the Industrial Public Relations Service (N.S.W.).
The objectives of the Sydney Trade Fair were to encourage trade, gain publicity for the industries of Sydney and Australia throughout the world, and promote tourism. It was envisaged that it would function in the style of international trade fairs such as those at Hanover, Munich or Tokyo. It was proposed that all the factories in NSW would have the opportunity to participate, as would representatives of industries from other countries trading with Australia.
The Sydney Trade Fair Committee consisted of two branches; the Citizens' Committee and the Executive Committee. The Citizens' Committee's members included the Governor, the Premier, the Minister for Labour and Industry and the Lord Mayor. The Executive Committee was made up of the Managing Director of the Industrial Public Relations Service (N.S.W.), as well as representatives from the Sydney Chamber of Commerce, the Retail Traders Association, the Commonwealth Government Department of Trade and other similar bodies. The Executive Committee's duties included reviewing progress of allocation of floor space, local and overseas publicity and the preparation of reports.
