After working with Leighton Irwin & Co. from 1955 to 1958, Briger was an Associate with Herber F Hely & Associates (1958-59) and McCauley Conran & Associates (1959-64). In 1964 he became a Partner and Principal which meant a company name change to McCauley Conran Briger & Associates. In 1986 the company merged with Clarke Perry Blackmore Pty Ltd and became Architecture Oceania Pty Ltd in 1987. Briger was appointed Director and Chairman.
In 1969 Briger was elected an Alderman on the Sydney City Council. His background led to his being heavily involved in the planning direction of the city. In 1969 he initiated the work on the Strategic Plan for the City of Sydney, which was published in 1971, and was the Chairman of the Steering Committee on the Plan. From 1974-77 he chaired the first Strategic Plan Review Committee and likewise the second committee from 1977-80 and the third committee from 1980.
In 1969, together with Leo Port, Briger initiated the concept of converting Martin Place to a pedestrian mall. Other projects that he was involved in were the Woolloomooloo Urban Renewal, Dixon Street Mall and the Pitt Street Mall.
Andrew Briger was also involved in many other activities. Member of the NSW Advisory Committee for Planning and Development 1975-77; Member of the NSW Traffic Authority 1977-80; Councillor of the Planning Research Centre, University of Sydney 1979-80; Chairman of the 'Saving Sydney Streets' Committee 1974-80; Member of the NSW Branch Committee of the Order of Australia 1979- ; Member of the National Committee of the Order of Australia 1980-85; President of the Order of Australia Association (NSW Branch) 1982-85; Member of the Special Broadcasting Service Advisory Committee 1983-85; Chairman of the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust 1982-89; Chairman of the Sydney Festival Youth Committee 1983-85; Member of the Design Committee of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects 1983-88; Member of the Urban Design Committee to the Department of Environment and Planning 1986-88; Chairman of the Central Sydney Advisory Committee on the Central Sydney Strategy 1987-89.
From 1991-99 he was elected a Councillor on the Woollahra Municipal Council and was Mayor in 1993 and 1994.
