It was created by the City Engineers Department I (AG-0005) in the period 01/11/1937 to 01/07/1980.

The entries are recorded chronologically by year. The volume provides instructions for recording entries in the footway and carriegeway paving registers. The following details must be recorded for carriageways: name of street and suburb initial, description of work, department files and vote ticket numbers, length in feet and area in square yards in either the 'Addition or Subtraction' column, progress totals of length and area, initials of recorder and date of entry.

The entries are recorded according to paving material, woodblocks, asphaltic concrete on concrete, fine grade asphaltic concrete on macadam, concrete penetration macadam.

Sections discontinued later cover woodblock on tramway, street asphalt on concrete, of GAC on cube setts, sheet asphalt on neuchatel, asphaltic concrete on neuchatel, asphaltic concrete on macadam, duratar, tramac, tarred concrete, asphaltic concrete on cube setts, neuchatel, dry macadam, cast iron, sandstone, unmade, sheet asphalt on macadam, cube sett, topeka, sheet asphalt on woodblock, asphaltic concrete on woodblock.

A road surface inventory for 1974 is provided and tables of lengths and areas of streets within the City of Sydney and the types of roadways and footways are given annually. A list is also given of revised ratings for roadways operating from 1957 onwards.

A system of index cards updated with each entry was maintained to provide access to the information. The carriage way chart also maintained as a visual record of the data.

The maintenance of the register was discontinued upon the discovery that area totals entered in 'Addition or Subtraction' were incorrect from 1975 onwards.
