Council had initially proposed to resume, subdivide and reconstruct this area in 1882. The matter was raised again in 1886, and in 1890 the Council obtained this plan and report by Smail and Jones. By 1906, Council had acquired the area and in 1907 instructed the Water and Sewerage Board to proceed with a stormwater sewer to alleviate drainage problems. This resumption was also known as the Athlone Place Resumption.
