City Engineer's Road Reconstruction Plans (E1), 1855

Unique IDAS-0473Date1st January 1855Date qualifierexactFormatPlanDescriptionThis series consists of engineer's drawings of road reconstruction work executed by Council throughout the regions of Sydney and South Sydney. The series was previously controlled by an alphanumeric system, alphabetic by street name and then consecutive number for each new job. This system appears to have been replaced in c.1905 when all drawings were renumbered.

This system was replaced by another alphanumeric code E1/plan number/sheet number: the E1 prefix identifies them as engineering road reconstruction drawings, the plan number is assigned to a particular intersection or section of road, the sheet number is assigned to each drawing of that particular intersection/section of road and therefore usually these sheets appear in chronological order. For example, E1-43/1 is a plan and section of System Street drawn 1912, E1-43/2 and E1-43/3 are reconstruction drawings of System Street for 1949 and 1950, respectively. There are some exceptions where old drawing have been assigned a new number, added to the system but not in chronological order.

When Council of the City of South Sydney was created, the City Engineer's plan collection was split and plans relating to South Sydney Council streets were transferred to South Sydney plan rooms. The Road Reconstruction Plans created by the Sydney City Council after 1988 are all assigned an E1-614 prefix.

This series consists of original drawings on linen, paper and cloth-backed paper and office copies of drawings. The office copies are paper plans copied from the original linen and used in the office as reference copies, the linen or tracing number appears on the bottom right corner.

The drawings contain annotations, contract numbers, handwritten notes and signatures. Aspects of road reconstruction include proposed construction, regrading, resurfacing, streetscaping, and woodpaving.

The entire series was conserved and/or microfilmed in 1991 as part of the microfilming of City Engineer's Plans Project in accordance with the Disposition Schedule for City Engineer's Department Plans. All original drawings, pre-1900 plans and plans not able to be adequately copied onto microfilm are retained in their original format in this series. In addition, any plans containing details of original construction are included in this series.
