Norman Weekes' Vegetable Markets Plans

Mr. Weekes occupied the position of City Surveyor and City Engineer from November 1924 to January 1925. He left Council to set up a private practice. The plans consist of his proposal for the restoration and extension of the vegetable markets in Haymarket. His scheme is shown in section and by floor plan.

In 1926, Council appointed a Committee to investigate the condition of the present markets and their possible extension. As a result of this investigation "Council authorised the preparation of a scheme to extend the markets. In 1927, Norman Weekes was appointed to: thoroughly investigate existing conditions of operation and probable requirements; prepare and submit working plans of co-ordinated rearrangement of streets, buildings, traffic facilities, vehicle parking etc.; prepare and submit a report upon problem of accommodation with an estimate of the cost of remodelling on a progressive plan of execution.

The plans and report were not received by the time Council lost office; they were not received until 10 April 1928. The Commissioners, who had replaced council, did not favour this scheme and instructed Council's own staff to prepare a simpler, less costly design.

The plans comprising this series therefore were never executed, the successful plans can be found in [CRS 427], Resumption Plans for Vegetable Markets, 1929-1937.
