Construction and maintenance of buildings and structures
Unique IDAY-0001DescriptionConstruction by the Council (or on behalf of the Council by contractors) of all kinds of buildings and other structures, including utility buildings such as public toilets and electricity substations, and structures such as bridges and walls. Maintenance of Council's buildings and structures once constructed or acquired. This activity does not include heritage refurbishments or restorations of buildings or other structures (Activity 17).
The earliest major buildings constructed by the Council appear to have been the Town Hall (first stage commenced in 1869), the 'old' Belmore Markets (1869) and the Exhibition Building constructed for the Colonial Government in Prince Alfred park in 1870. The first City Architect was appointed in 1871.
However, prior to these major works, Council was involved in the construction and maintenance of smaller structures. The first works appear to have been substantial repairs to the cattle pens at Hay Market, which the Board of Works Committee approved on 6 July 1844. On 3 August 1844 the Committee invited tenders to erect a weather board cottage at Lachlan Swamp and a Wharfinger's Office at the Market Wharf. The start date for this activity is taken from the first of these events.
