The Sydney Fountains Committee was established by a public meeting held on 3 September 1958.

The series was created by the Sydney Fountains Committee AG-0170 (01/01/1958 to 01/01/1967). Its aim was to establish a movement to put fountains in public places in Sydney to enhance their natural beauty and to commemorate families, individuals and organisations. It was chaired by the Lord Mayor of Sydney, and his secretary and the City Treasurer were honorary treasurers.

In addition to the General and Executive Committees, a Designs Committee was set up, which proceeded to run design competitions for fountains in a number of selected sites, such as the Fitzroy Gardens in Kings Cross, Moore Park, Customs House Square and Macquarie Place. The Committee's last project was the Kippax Fountain in Moore Park, which seems to have attracted some controversy.

At its meeting on 13 July 1967, the Committee resolved that at its next meeting a new committee would be elected, one which would act as an "aesthetic advisory committee". This marks the last recorded meeting of the Sydney Fountains Committee.

The minutes of the meetings were recorded in duplicate and interleaved in bound volumes. One of these has a strap to hold the papers in place. The correspondence on the manilla folders relates to subjects such as the construction of particular fountains or entries in the competition held by the Designs Committee.
