Unique IDAG-0170DescriptionThe Sydney Fountains Committee was established at a public meeting held on 3 September 1958. Its aim was to establish a movement to put fountains in public places in Sydney to enhance their natural beauty and to commemorate families, individuals and organisations. It was chaired by the Lord Mayor of Sydney, and his secretary and the City Treasurer were honorary Treasurers. The Committee dealt primarily with the Parks and Recreations Department (CA 10), and was made up of a mix of members from within Council and the general public, including some sculptors and designers.
In addition to the Executive and General Committees, a Designs Committee was also established, which was responsible for design competitions for fountains in a number of selected sites, such as the Fitzroy Gardens in Kings Cross, Moore Park, Customs House Square, and Macquarie Place. The Committee's last project was the Kippax Fountain in Moore Park, which seems to have attracted some controversy. The last recorded meeting of the Committee was on 13 July 1967, where it was resolved that at a further meeting, (to be held on 10 August 1967), a new committee would be elected, to act as an "aesthetic advisory committee". No record of this later meeting is held by Council.CreationPublic meeting held on 3 September 1958AbolitionResolution at the meeting of 13 July 1967
