Regulation 3 of this Act required the owners of certain buildings to provide shelters for persons accommodated in the building. It appears that it was the responsibility of the City Building Surveyor to write to the affected building owners and advise them of their responsibility. See the City Architect and Building Surveyors Department II (AG-0016).

The plans are controlled by an annual single numbering system allocated from Air Raid Shelter Register (AS-0724). The register is also an alphabetical index to the plans by the street address.

Correspondence and reports regarding the shelters are contained in Air Raid Shelter Files, 1941-1943 (AS-0131). The files were allocated the same number as the plans.

Applications to erect air raid shelters ceased in July 1943 but some files in AS-0131 contain correspondence and memoranda as late as 1945.

Only a representative selection of files was kept as archives.
