Town Hall Letting Registers, 1935

Unique IDAS-0727Date1st January 1935Date qualifierexactFormatVolume - HardcoverDescriptionThis series contains lettings registers for the Town Hall. This includes the main hall or Centennial Hall, the Vestibule, the Lower Hall, and later the Treasury Bar.

The volumes have various titles, including Registers of Town Hall Sydney Rents, Town Hall Hire, and Town Hall Diaries. They record the following information: date and time of booking, name of the hirer, nature of the booking, and amount and date of payment. There is a "remarks" column which is used to record cancellation of a booking, related file numbers in [CRS 34], Town Clerk's Correspondence Files, and resolutions of Council, especially if the hirer was granted free use of the hall.

The Registers for the period prior to 1965 appear to be no longer extant. The Register for 1991 has only a few entries in it. There is a single volume covering the year 1935, not a register but a booking diary that was used by the Supervisor of the Town Hall Attendants to record how many attendants were needed for a particular function and whether the bell chimes needed to be stopped (for example, during a musical performance).

However, the Minutes of the Finance Committee [CRS 11], often record applications for use of the Town Hall at reduced or free rates, so it is possible to find some bookings pre-dating this series.
