The inside front cover has been annotated with the year 1925 and the initials "JS" so it is possible that it was compiled in that year. The earliest reference inside is 1899, although not all of the references are dated so it could be even earlier.

The index gives a brief description of the subject matter and then a number. For example, under "A", there are references to "Apprenticeships, 371", Abbatoirs, 373", and "Ada Lane, 376".

CRS 56 is controlled by packet numbers assigned by the Archives Section. The original numbers, including the ones referred to in this series, are shown on the lists in parentheses. For example, CRS 56/178 (101) and CRS 56/180 (102).
