The appeal was established in January 1994 in response to serious bush fires which caused loss of life and property in several areas on the outskirts of Sydney that month.

The records relate to the creation of the Appeal, legal establishment of a Trust and appointment of trustees, meetings of the trustees/advisory panel, donations of funds from public bodies businesses and individuals, requests for funds and disbursement of the funds.

The Appeal raised more $10 million, which was distributed to the Bush Fire Brigade, other disaster relief organisations, community organisations in the affected areas, and to families which had suffered loss of family members or property.

A 'Final Report' containing summary financial information, lists of the principal donors of funds, and the names of the Trustees, was published by the City of Sydney (nd, probably 1997). Copies included in this series and also in CRS 45.
