Unique IDAS-0956DateBetween 1st January 1947 and 1st January 1949Date qualifiercircaFormatPlanDescriptionThis series comprises a portfolio of plans drawn by Harold H Smith, Architect & Town Planner, during the period mid 1947 to mid 1949. The plans seem to have been commissioned by the Municipal Council of Redfern as a project to compile a planning scheme for Redfern as required by the Local Government (Town and Country Planning) Act 1945.

From the beginning of 1949 Redfern was absorbed by the City of Sydney. Town Planning within the City Council was the responsibility of the City Engineers Department at that time, and it seems likely that the completed Redfern scheme was acquired by the Department and remained with their records until transferred to the Archives in 1997.

The plans in the portfolio include -

- sewerage and water mains in Redfern
- hydraulic power lines, gas and electricity lines
- traffic flows and counts
- public transport routes and other traffic control information
- employment patterns
- types of businesses and retail shops
- leasehold land
- changing land use 1861-1975
- current and proposed land use (and future development phases)

The future of Redfern was envisaged as residential areas of multi-storey flats set in parkland grounds, with separate industrial areas and a retail/business centre.
