Strategic town planning
Unique IDAY-0030DescriptionCreation and management of town planning instruments such as zoning plans (specifiying limits on construction and permitted uses of buildings within designated areas, and guidelines for provision of services such as roadways and amenities such as open pedestrian spaces), and other plans intended to shape the built environment of the city so as to enhance objectives such as habitability and attractiveness to commerce.
On 28 May 1891 the Finance Committee recommended preparation of a Bill to Regulate the Height of Buildings in the City. Heights were to be determined by the width of the street they fronted (for example a 45 feet wide street could have buildings no more than 55 feet high), and all public buildings were to have fire escapes (CRS22/41).
Appointment of a Special Committee to investigate the preparation of a comprehensive scheme for the "Remodelling of Sydney". This Committee met from 15 September to 20 October 1927. [CRS 9/25] However, it was not until 1936 with the appointment of the City Planning and Improvements Committee that strategic town planning became a permanent feature of Council business.
This activity overlaps with the activity of approving development applications, especially for major projects such as multi-storey buildings on consolidated sites.CreationFinance Committee recommendation to Council about a Height of Buildings Bill, 28 May 1891
