DescriptionThis series consists of signed original minutes, as well as file copies which include the agendas and business papers of the Sydney Festival, 1992-1995 (AG-0178).
The Executive during 1992 and 1993 appears to be senior staff of Sydney Festival Limited while from 1994 the Executive consists of the Lord Mayor, The General Manager of Sydney Festival, the General Manager of Sydney City Council plus several others.
The Festival of Sydney had its origins in the Waratah Festivals which were run from 1956-1973 by the Sydney Committee. The Sydney Committee was established in 1956 to promote and organise spring festivals and Australia Day celebrations.
Declining interest and sponsorship in the Waratah Festival led to a rethink about the nature of the Festival. Stephen Hall, formerly Artistic Director of the Australian Opera, was approached to submit a report to the Sydney Committee on a new festival for Sydney. His recommendations included holding a summer festival in January, and changing the Sydney Committee from an unincorporated committee to a non-profit company, limited by guarantee. This occurred on 18 September, 1976.
The first Sydney Festival was held in January 1977.
