Sale of Sydney Common Allotments Records
Description
Unique IDAS-0997DateBetween 15th May 1867 and 14th October 1940Date qualifiercircaFormatVolume - Leather BoundDescriptionThis series contains two volumes relating to the sale of Sydney Common Allotments by Council. Sydney Common was renamed Moore Park in 1871.
The Sydney Common was proclaimed on 5 October 1811, and dedicated as a Common of 490 acres on 5 October 1866 under the Sydney Commons Improvement Act of 1866, with Council appointed as trustees.
This Act followed lobbying by Council in 1866 to empower it to sell a portion of the Sydney Common, and to spend the money raised on improving the remainder of the Common (Minutes of Council 1866, pages 106 and 271).
The land sold is bounded generally by Moore Park Road, South Dowling Street, and Oxford Street in Paddington, with the exception of the Victoria Barracks. This area now contains the following roads: Napier St, Albion Ave, Church St, Josephson St, Greens Rd, Barlett Ln, Iris St, Selwyn St, Seymour Pl, Williams Ln, Little Dowling St, Verona St, Magenta Ln, Rose Tce, Marshall St, Rosebud Ln, Oatley Rd, Alexander St, Little Stewart St, Walter St, Martin St, Regent St, Leinster St, Renny St, Renny Ln, Regent Ln, Bent St, Newcombe St, Gordon St, Gordon Ln, Stewart Pl, George Ln, Ulster St, Church Pl, Watson St, Elizabeth St.
The first volume in this series is a register of sales of Sydney Common Allotments. It records the sale date, the name of the purchaser, allotment number, section number, quantity (in feet), price, total amount, deposit, bills with interest, and when deed issued.
There are nineteen sales recorded in this book. The first sale was on 15 May 1867, the 19th sale on 24 April 1882. However, there was a supplementary sale on 5 May 1882 to Martin Cannon.
The front of the first volume also contains a list of trees planted in Moore Park on 9 September 1868, called "Alderman's Row". The list shows that 21 pine trees were planted, numbered 17 to 37, for each Mayor of the City from 1843 to 1869. 17 fig trees were also planted, numbered 1 to 16 and 32, for each of the Aldermen from 1868 to 1869.
The other volume in this series was prepared by the City Surveyor, and contains plans of the allotments for sale. The dates correspond to the sale dates listed in the first volume, and the plans are annotated with the name of the purchaser and the price paid.
The plans were annotated with red ink on 11 October 1940 to show the measurements of the blocks. There is also a reference to the City Engineer's Description Books (CRS 843).
