The Friends was set up to raise money for the Sydney Festival mostly through the running of raffles. It is not clear when the Friends was first formed but the Annual Report for the year ending 30 June 1993 is described as the third annual report for the Friends. The Friends were incorporated on 18 July 1991.

The last meeting seems to have been held on 16 January 1995. The Friends was wound up in 1996.
