The Green Square Urban Renewal Project is the largest urban renewal project in Australia. It aims to promote high quality residential development and breathe new life into Sydney's oldest industrial area. Central to the project is the development of the Green Square Town Centre, a 14 hectare area located alongside Green Square Railway Station. During 2004/2005 we established a Green Square Taskforce made up of members from the Council and the Central Sydney Planning Committee to drive the development of the Green Square Town Centre Draft Local Environmental Plan. The framework for long term planning of the City is established by a three year Strategic Plan. Local Environmental and Development Control Plans are used to detail acceptable limits for Developments in greater detail. The State Government has specifically excluded some projects and parts of the City from Council’s responsibility – most notably The Rocks and Darling Harbour.All development proposals for the City areas are submitted to the planning Department before being considered by Council. (annual Report, p71, 1984). Council’s vision for the future of the Sydney City was detailed in the Draft Central Sydney Local Environment Plan (LEP) and Development Control Plan (DCP) which were placed on exhibition for public comment. Together they form the City Plan which will supersede the existing interim planning polices and the Central Sydney Local Environmental Plan, 1993. The first statutory planning scheme since 1971, the City Plan will guide the City’s future development into the next century. (annual Report, p29 1994/1995)
