He was a metal merchant, Managing Director of the Sydney Smelting Co. and Chairman of the Australian Alum Co. before his election to the Council. He was a member of the Finance Committee, 1907-1918; the Electric Lighting Committee, 1907-1913; the Fruit and Vegetable Markets Committee in 1907; the Queen Victoria Market Building Special Committee, 1910-1911; and the Works Committee, 1914-1918. After joining the Australian Field Artillery, he was commissioned in 1907 and promoted Captain the following year and eventually appointed Major in 1910.
