He was a building contractor. Young was credited for the construction of many metropolitan churches, the interior of the Bourke Street Synagogue, the Ballarat Jail and powder magazine, and St. John's College of the University of Sydney. Other works he was involved with included St. Mary's Cathedral, the Department of Lands building; the General Post Office; the old Redfern Railway Station, the demolished Exhibition Building in Prince Alfred Park and the Garden Palace for the Sydney International Exhibition of 1879. He was the founding President of the Builders' and Contractors' Association of New South Wales. He was also an alderman of the Leichhardt Municipal Council from 1879 and became its Mayor that year, and again in 1884 1885.
